Cultural Setting
This chapter examines the cultural setting of the Chumash, and summarizes the evidence used to reconstruct Chumash society over the years, namely the early documents. It then looks at the archaeological research that has been conducted on the mainland, which is further split into three main eras. Finally, the chapter addresses the debate on the emergence of the sociopolitical complexity and the social sphere of the Chumash, including their economic system, their chiefs, and the social roles present in Chumash society.
