This chapter studies the ethnographic, archaeological, and ethnohistoric sources of information in order to address the nature of political power among the Chumash Indians. It shows how mortuary practices became one of the best indicators of differentiation of rank in Chumash society and the roles of gender in the exercise of religious and political power. Finally, the manifestations of power within Chumash society are examined.
