This chapter demonstrates how natural selection leads to phenotypic divergence among populations, first reviewing the evidence regarding natural selection and microevolutionary change in anole populations. It describes how species interactions such as predation lead to habitat shifts and predictable changes in patterns of natural selection, and then considers what patterns of geographic variation may reveal about anole microevolution. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the heritability of anole traits and the significance and evolutionary role of phenotypic plasticity in anole evolution.
