This chapter tests the hypothesis that phenotypic differences represent adaptations to different ecological circumstances, examining a variety of traits for which variation among anole species may have an adaptive basis. It addresses two questions: (1) how does variation in phenotype relate to variation in functional capabilities? and (2) how does variation in functional capabilities relate to variation in ecology and behavior? The chapter focuses on the adaptive significance of interspecific variation in limb length, including the functional consequences and interactive effects of limb length, as well as surface dimensions on functional capabilities.
