This chapter describes the Texas bison slaughter. The business of hunting bison for their hides had started in Kansas about 1870. By 1873 bison numbers in Kansas had shriveled and hunters looked around for another supply. Texas held the only large herds of bison left in the southern plains. Hunters hesitated to go there because they heard rumors that federal agreements with Comanches and other tribes prohibited it. Seeing the decline of Kansas bison and the approach of the railhead to Dodge as a possible shipping point, a group of hunters decided to move to Texas. Between 1873 and 1879, they had permanently crippled the southern plains Indians and had taken out the Texas bison.
