Traditions of grassland management, solidified as they are by isolation and by the power of the landscape to stiffen the psyche, resist change particularly well. Some other ranches in New Mexico and the wider West are likewise beginning to challenge convention. Some people with incomes earned elsewhere own a disproportionate number of these. Most still run cattle—cowboy legends die hard. But in addition, some educate, some work to restore biodiversity, and some advertise wildlife or wilderness tours.
