The Making of Arab Paris
The Making of Arab Paris
The plurality of origins and experiences in this chapter was the key difference between the milieu in Paris and that of Marseille. Where the Marseillais Arab population had arrived in a large convoy, attracting further immigrants in subsequent years, the Arab population of Paris had accrued more gradually. In the middle years of the decade, and particularly after the retirement of so many Arab soldiers in 1804, a trickle of new arrivals flowed in from Melun and Marseille. Where the Arab population in Marseille was concentrated in clusters, and structured by institutions such as the Council of Refugees, religious services, and the Arabic-language course, the Parisian milieu was far more scattered, in a way that was typical of the metropolis itself. It may be that some of the new arrivals were seeking a certain anonymity: a case of adultery lay behind the arrival of at least one couple.
