Edward F. Ricketts worked on a book about tide pools entitled Between Pacific Tides. Jack Calvin assisted in collecting, proofreading, editing, and providing photographs, while local artist Ritchie Lovejoy contributed detailed drawings of the animals. Ricketts's concern with ecological holism, which he considered the interrelation of animals to one another and their environment set the book—and himself—apart from the norm. He submitted the book with the title A Natural History of Pacific Shore Invertebrates to Stanford University Press in late 1931, but it was rejected by Dr. W. K. Fisher, a well-respected marine biologist at Hopkins. Ricketts redrafted the book, but was rebuked for the second time by Fisher. Nevertheless, it was finally approved by Stanford. Between Pacific Tides is considered a classic in the literature of marine biology, and with more than a hundred thousand copies sold is one of the best-selling books ever published by Stanford University Press.
