This chapter looks at how setsuwa can illustrate an inverse relation between body and text, investigating the setsuwa of bodily sacrifice and corporeal dissolution as events of performative writing. It studies the often violent and self-sacrificial dismemberment of the human body into textual fragment. The chapter also views setsuwa as a type of writing that repeatedly turns to the dual tropes of text and flesh as a way to actively request physiological and emotional responses from its audiences.

Keywords:   setsuwa, bodily sacrifice, corporeal dissolution, performative writing, textual fragment, text and flesh, physiological responses, emotional responses
