This chapter shows that ostraca occupied a central place in the patterns of everyday writing in the Graeco-Roman East—not merely in Egypt, but all through this cultural zone—which has sometimes been obscured by two types of archaeological variability, one a matter of the practice of excavation and the other a question of the particular local conditions affecting the survival of writing materials. It notes however that ostraca have not occupied a central place in papyrologists' conception of their field, still less in the image of papyrology in the minds of others.

Keywords:   ostraca, Graeco-Roman East, Egypt, archaeological variability, excavation, papyrology
