Clark Terry shares here his experience of performing with Fate Marable's band, and putting up with Fate Marable's horrendous temper. He had a highly respected name and was practically a household name as far as the jazz scene was concerned, but Fate had been reduced to playing at a club near the fashionable downtown riverfront. The joint was patronized by whites. Clark made a few mistakes while performing for Fate, which resulted in his pay being slashed. After three months of working with Fate, Clark had saved some money, and he gave some to his wife to help with the baby and some to his sister for food. He also paid a few bucks to the hockshop for his sister's gold watch that she had previously placed as collateral. After a long time, he was hired to play in Danville's band.
