In this chapter, Clark Terry shares his experience of legal custody of his son, Hiawatha, his trials on the road, and his dreams of buying a house so he could settle down. It describes Clark's association with Pauline. Pauline was a schoolmate of Clark's and had already been married twice. Clark and Pauline shared stories with each other of their previous marriages and divorce. Clark began visiting Pauline everyday after his gig with George Hudsons's band at the Club Plantation and he also gave up on gambling to save money. With more meetings with Pauline and her family, Pauline's family became fond of Clark and Clark expressed his desire to marry Pauline. Clark saw in Pauline's father, Henry, what he desired to see in his own father. He was eventually invited by Henry to move into their place.
