Clark's decision to leave Count Basie's band to join Duke Ellington was not an easy one. This news came to Basie with Clark lying about his illness as the reason for being away from the band. Basie was easy with Clark leaving and assured him that his place in the band was always open. Clark waited to have his firt experience with Duke Ellington, but Duke's checks came regularly through the mail, while Clark jammed around town and played scab gigs. A short time later, he joined Local 197 of the American Federation of Musicians, the colored union in St. Louis. During the same time, Clark rekindled his relationship with Sy, who had taught him a lot about jazz and music, giving him lessons, taking him to rehearsals, and pointing him in the right directions.
Keywords: Clark, Duke Ellington, Sy, American Federation of Musicians, jazz
