In this chapter, Clark shares the experience of his going overseas, which had long been a dream. Duke and his band had got the offer of performing in Europe on the Île de France in 1958. The tour took them to several countries and Clark describes his agony over dealing with several types of new currencies. However, the hospitality that the band received was far better than what they usually received in America. European audiences respected jazz the way Americans respected classical music. They loved to hear jazz played by American musicians who were the composers, recording artists, or performers of jazz. The orchestra band played in nice clubs and concert halls. Everywhere they went, Clark played his trumpet and his flugelhorn, and got a lot of compliments on his new horn.
