This chapter examines the geology and paleoenvironments of the Paraná-Paraguay Basin. It provides a synthetic chronology of the geological and paleoenvironmental history of the La Plata Basin over the Upper Cretaceous and Cenozoic periods. It evaluates the evidence for the so-called Paranense Sea, a hypothetical intracontinental seaway to explain similarities between Caribbean and Argentinean Miocene marine faunas.
