This is one of the central summaries of Suzuki’s thought about awakening in Zen Buddhism during the postwar period. Suzuki, who presented this talk at an Eranos conference in the early 1950s, uses the language of comparative religion and continental philosophy to interpret Zen for his audience. Suzuki also uses the Ten Ox Herding pictures to elucidate the nature of awakening in modern Rinzai Zen Buddhism.
