Nannies, eldercare workers, nurses, teachers, therapists, life coaches, call-center workers—many of us engage in “emotional labor”—the work of trying to feel the right feeling for the job. Such work can be hard if one is working in a “broken care system”—with high turnover and care-inhibiting practices. But at its best, it can be both meaningful and fun.
