Chapter 2, “Conflict in a Colonial Church,” explores three ongoing sources of conflict in Catholic life during the early colonial era in Vietnam: communitarian conflict between Catholics and other religious groups, tensions between Catholic missions and the colonial state during the high point of the French Third Republic's campaign to secularize French society, and fraying race relations in Catholic life itself.
