Chapter 4, “Vietnamese Catholic Tradition on Trial,” explores how the emergence of a system to write spoken Vietnamese by means of the Western alphabet (quốc ngữ) gave rise to a new world of print, ranging from pamphlets and newspapers to a wide body of original books and translations. The growth of a public sphere through the printed word became a central part of mass Catholic experience and helped to change Catholic understandings of self and society.
