Chapter 6, “The Culture and Politics of Vietnamese Catholic Nationalism,” considers how Vietnamese Catholics came to understand and debate the idea of nationalism, how new essentialist ideas about “national culture” made religions like Buddhism and Confucianism a source of conflict in debates about the relationship of Catholics to the national community, and how the rise of Social Catholicism and anticommunism shaped the relationship of Vietnamese Catholics to emerging revolutionary politics.
