During the winter of 1911–1912, Rilke was a guest in the castle of the Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis Hohenlohe in Duino. Rilke's hostess was as fascinated by telepathic and spiritualistphenomena as she was renowned for her hospitality.Writers, antiquarians, and philosophers were made to feel at home in the castle and were invited to participate in séances and experiment with automatic writing.
