This chapter begins by providing new and updated estimates of plant endemism in both the state of California and the Californian floristic province. It then summarizes the geographic and ecological patterns of plant diversity and endemism within the state. It describes the new evidence on the evolution of Californian endemic plants provided by recent molecular and paleobotanical studies. It concludes by considering Californian plant endemism in relation to the other Mediterranean-climate regions of the world.
