A good deal of the book is dedicated to the grueling discipline necessary to be a successful Weiqi player. The conclusion takes a step back to examine what happens when someone is prevented from playing. As with some of the accounts in earlier chapters, we see that one’s parents’ views of the game can mean the difference between becoming a professional Weiqi player and forsaking it for other career opportunities. Here we see the complicated relationship between individual desire and familial responsibility. This last chapter also reviews some of the more important themes of the book, including constructions of masculinity and the ways in which tradition is appropriated to meet the future.
