Introduction
Chapter 1 provides the organizational context for California’s diverse biota by major organismal groups. Biogeographic studies of California are often focused on the California Floristic Province; however, for the purposes of colonization history from the south, north, east, and west, the biogeographic boundaries that define the California Floristic Province are expanded here and loosely beyond the state political boundaries. A brief history of the field of phylogeography is provided with a brief description of the current state of the field. An overview of the most commonly used methods of data collection and analysis is summarized.
