This brief chapter in part 4 is one of the commentaries on the volume, in this case by a leading Russian scholar. Russia is a part of Asia as well as part of Europe, raising the question whether Russian historiography is “European.” The chapter succinctly sketches the treatment of American history. The Cold War ensured that Russia had large contingent of U.S. history specialists, though the Soviet version of American history has now been largely abandoned. The essay comments on the various chapters, and the author is intrigued by what the volume could suggest about the possible emergence of a distinctive European identity or “Europeanness.”
