Beginnings
This chapter discusses Burnett’s childhood and education. He and his family moved from Mississippi to the Watts area of Los Angeles at the end of the 1940s, and in the 1960s he was admitted to the film school at UCLA, where he became a leading figure in the “L.A. Rebellion” of young black filmmakers. The chapter discusses the aims of that group and describes two of Burnett’s early films, Several Friends and The Horse.
