This chapter portrays the revolution in the objects of consumption in Zouping that occurred from 1985 to 2012, while indicating that there has been less change in the social purposes for which consumption is undertaken. While drastic changes in the modes of transportation and communications utilized and the varieties of food and entertainment available are apparent, the social production of familial and extrafamilial relationships remained relatively stable. Attention is also paid to the rise of migrant-worker consumption, the effects of automobile consumption on the city, and changes to the daily habits of Zouping residents.
