This chapter depicts the lives of migrants to Zouping who come from distant locales. It depicts the effects of this migration on their kinship arrangements and their experiences with factory work. Because discussion of the reasons for their moving to Zouping involves their hopes for the future, this chapter explores the theoretical literature on the anthropology of hope and examines the ways in which hopes for the future carry cultural idioms from the past. Because their hopes were in danger of not being realized, the chapter also analyzes the despair and alienation of these migrants.

Keywords:   long distant migration, factory work, hope, alienation, despair, kinship
