Youth between Factories and Services
This chapter begins with a discussion of how the social category of “youth” is itself a product of modernity in Zouping. It then goes on to explore the lives of Zouping’s youth, who are mostly engaged in service or factory work. The trope of “habituation” is discussed in detail, as the ability to “habituate” to factory work or another form of work is a prerequisite to settling down, marrying, and ending one’s youth. The distinctions youth draw among various forms of work and the types of people who engage in them inform their imagination of possible futures for themselves.
