Chapter 2 deals exclusively with the group’s First Arts Festival, during which the group’s historic performance of La Traviata—as the first production of this opera by a non-European cast—took place. The preparations for the festival, the festival itself, and, more importantly, the aftermath and political fallout of their performance for apartheid’s government dignitaries are presented. The chapter illustrates how the nature of the group’s political compromise is large ignored.
